Cloud computing has become more and more prevalent in the enterprise market today. Both small to medium enterprises (SMEs) and large corporations are increasingly moving their applications and data to the cloud. However, given the differences between expectations and services rendered, most organizations fail to reach an optimized strategy that lets them achieve goals in an efficient and productive manner.

The term “cloud” has become a marketing term, and not everyone fully understands what cloud computing really is. As such, organizations can sometimes fail to understand the opportunities in cloud computing. Cloud computing is meant to be flexible and scalable. As such, implementing cloud deployments should be taken with at least the medium-term in mind. Cloud deployments can grow with an organization, and businesses should go for services that they can foresee they will need in five to ten years to come. Design limitations and service limitations can be cumbersome to deal with, and so

Cloud service providers are fond of using terms like software-as-a-service, platform-as-a-service, infrastructure-as-a-service, private cloud, public cloud, and the like. For SMEs, what’s important to consider is to use a mix of these services and deployments to reach their goals. Otherwise, focusing on just one particular deployment might be limiting, and an organization can miss out on the flexibility that the cloud offers.
  3. Seeing the cloud as a functionality rather than strategy. The cloud is not just a functionality that online service providers can offer. Rather, SMEs should view the cloud as a business strategy for getting ahead, rather than just a set of services to subscribe to. Viewing the cloud as a business strategy will enable an organization to implement cloud deployments such that these will be more deeply integrated into their business processes and ideals.
  4. Letting the IT department do all the talking. A cloud deployment would mean that the entire organization would be using the cloud services, not just the IT department. As such, everyone should have a say on the kind of services to acquire and implement.
  5. Being stingy with performance. Most organizations would make the move to the cloud to save on costs. However, some businesses fail to understand the need to strike a balance between cost-effectiveness and performance. Some cloud services may be inexpensive, but this could come at the cost of slow performance, especially given the differences in Internet connection speed and quality.

When going for a cloud deployment, organizations will need to have a deeper understanding of their needs and requirements, and the services that providers will render. There is no question that the cloud is the future of enterprise computing. Businesses will, however, need to ensure they sign up for the right cloud services to achieve optimum performance and productivity.
